About Me:
I am a senior human resources specialist by profession but I am also an avocational archaeologist and I have participated in a number of excavations and archaeology-related activities over the years, including an excavation season at the site of Bethsaida in Israel and many hours of volunteer work at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. I studied anthropology and archaeology during my undergraduate years at Brigham Young University. I administer an information blog about archaeology, focusing on archaeological excavation opportunities and job openings. I am excited to be a part of this network.

Blog Posts: "Field School" and "On Being an Education Officer"

A blog post is a great way to share information about personal archaeology-related experiences and to provide information and advice that is useful to our members on this site. Everyone is encouraged to post. Thank you, Dean Macholl and Emma Oxenby Wohlfart for your recent posts ("Field School" and "On Being an Education Officer"). These are the types of posts that make this site worthwhile!

The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival

For all who may be interested, I am posting the following announcement on behalf of Dr. Richard M. Pettigrew of the Archaeological Legacy Institute. This event looks extremely interesting, and for those of us who cannot attend, the short video clips of the featured films on The Archaeology Channel website should prove fascinating: Friends and colleagues: The fifth annual installment of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival will take place May 20-24, 2008. This event, whi… Continue

The 2008 Archaeology from Below Conference in Australia Calls for Proposals

I'm a big believer in public archaeology, so I thought I would pass this bit of information along by way of an announcement for those of you professionals who may be interested in participating in and proposing sessions for this interesting conference in Australia: Join us this year in Adelaide, South Australia, for the AIMA/ASHA/AAMH annual archaeology conference, 24-28 September 2008. We borrowed this year's conference theme from the 1960s movement "History from Below." That movement saw his… Continue

Google Ads

Some of you may have noticed the Google ads on the right hand side of the site. This is the price I am paying to provide a free website for all of us. I do not actually have control over the content of the ads, nor do I collect any revenue from them. These ads are the "sponsors" of the site, if you will, but the revenues go to the web host called "ning". You will see ads like "Hunt for Arrowheads", which I do not promote or condone, but I do apologize if any of these ads offend you as archaeolog… Continue

A New Element Added to ArchaeologyNet: Groups

Everyone -- A new element has been added to ArchaeologyNet. If you wish to start a specialized discussion or information exchange group focusing on a particular subject area or interest, you can do so by clicking on the GROUPS button at the top of the page. At first I thought we were too small as a network to do this, but I now think that I was a little too presumptuous. So, if you're interested, go for it.............

Dan,

Like others have posted, I don't mind things being sold on the website, but I would prefer that items were advertised in a forum made for that purpose, rather than being spammed by personal messages like the one that "Jose" sent out.

That's what I thought. But I can't find any tab like that. I found the "settings" tab much there's nothing for the background. Oh well, it's not a big issue. Thanks for you reply though!

HI! Sorry I haven't been on much. But I've forgotten how to edit my page background!! Could you tell me how to do that?

Dan - Perhaps because I am a little less tech savvy, I disagree with the previous posts - I don't have a problem with the occasional offering. I concur with your sentiments, and the rules seem appropriate. It surprised me to get the request, but when I saw the items for sale, they fit with the general tenor of the site, and I saw no harm. The only caveat that I would offer is that YOU should receive something for such a use of your site - the people offering stuff for sale on the site that you developed should not do so for free.

I agree with Ross. We all have an interest and need for archaeology related resources. A special forum or classified section may be the way to go.

Hi Dan, I think the practice of advertising through comments on profile pages really shouldn't be allowed at all. It tends to spiral out of control if it's tolerated; spam is never fun.

However, i can't see an issue with having a forum for archaeology related classifieds, or a group specifically for that sort of thing. Of course we all need access to books, tools, and other resources, but I don't think any of us would want to have to wade through adverts to read the interesting parts of someone's profile.

But if we are allowed to advertise....does anyone want to buy a volvo?! :P

Dan,I am against the use of this site for targeted Sales of any kind. Who knows that
this may merely be a scam. Where they get your Money and you get Nothing!!!!

Hi Dan!

I really like your network. Keep your eye on Ning's blog for the next few days. ArchaeologyNet should be featured there! Good luck with the digging.

best,
Will

Dan, might I ask if you know whether a regular electrical cord/jack (i.e. 3 prong or 2 prong) is workable at most camping grounds or would I need an adapter (i.e. 12 volt, etc)? I meant to ask the grounds when I booked, but I thought I might ask you. Thanks.
