Job Opportunity with Kanasas Historical Society

The Kansas Historical Society (KSHS) has an opening for an archeologist to carry out cultural resources management work. A series of contracts with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) require that we hire an archeologist to serve the day-to-day needs of KDOT and the NRCS, which includes consultation on proposed projects and fieldwork associated with some projects.

The minimum qualifications for this position are:

A graduate degree in Archeology or in Anthropology with a specialization in Archeology, or a graduate degree in a closely related field, and at least one year of experience in research concerning archeological resources;

At least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources; and

A valid driver's license

The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in the Central Plains and be interested and proficient in both prehistoric and historic archeology. Preferred qualities includes experience conducting CRM fieldwork, familiarity with pertinent state and federal regulations, good written and verbal communication skills, experience in the evaluation of site significance; the ability to create databases and to produce figures for reports, the ability to draw together the work of other archeologists and specialists to produce clear, concise reports in a short period of time; and a demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, as evidenced by timely completion of research reports or similar documents.

Knowledge of Historic period archeology is especially desirable. The applicant will be expected to be available to be in the field about 8 days per month, more at times, and will be expected to be available for overnight field stays.
