The very fact that I titled this blog post this way was because the whole megafauna explanation is getting to be rote now. It is a sad statement for our educational system that basic things like the end of the ice age are not taught anymore. I actually had a teenager this past weekend that wasn't required to have ANY sciences to graduate from high school. There is a reason why are children are dropping lower and lower in academics as compared to the rest of the world. And it is our fault. Unfort…

Ok. Week one of my summer job with the Forest Service is officially over. I began work on May 24th, and my days off for June are Sundays and Mondays. I worked six days in a row, which wasn't that bad. When Mollie and I arrived on May 23, it was threatening to rain and we had to set up our tent quick. Since it was a loaner tent, it didn't go as quickly as we had hoped. Luckily, our supervisor Leigh Anne and her daughter Rue were familiar with the tent style and got us straightened up quick. Sara…

On Sunday I began my summer job as a Forest Service employee at Hudson Meng Bison Bonebed. I lead tours through the bonebed and answer questions to the best of my ability. It isn't that bad, and my co workers are nice people. My daughter and I are camping on site as resident employees, and the biggest thing right now is that it hasn't been sunny, just rainy. I am sick of the rain. It also makes the dirt roads out here very slick and nasty, which is going to chase off tourists. I want the sun out…

Isn't that just the way it goes? A whole week where I could just relax and catch up on my readings of journals, and I spend four days in bed sick. Then, lovely old man winter swamps Denver and all the city goes into panic. Its the same story every time it snows. That was the day we decided to go grocery shopping, since no one was out. Didn't have to deal with lines.
I am working on getting a paid internship this summer. That is so important, the paid part. Especially in this day and age. I hone…

I am seriously doubting the sanity of my project I have proposed for the Fall Semester. I am going to have to work really hard at being able to process the tools I am going to need to butcher and analyze. Oh, didn't I tell anyone? I decided for an Independant Study, I should help make a comparison collection of lithic tool marks on animal bone...including casting the marks. Now I just have to figure out where I am going to get other bones besides pig, cow, chicken, turkey, duck, fish, whatever c…

Fall semester sucked. Spring semester brings less homework and the job of trying to find a part time job, which is pretty hard in this economy. One class is really boring, and forensics is fun, just because I love it!!! My kid has turned 10 years old and I feel really old right now. My days are study and job hunt and clean the house. I am also planning a huge garden because I am sick and tired of paying so much for veggies. I am going to yellowstone, and I am looking forward to a month of archae…

So, excitedly I anticipate this being the last fall semester I spend at Metro. At least I hope that is the case. I really want to get out of here...Not that it is the worst school in the world, but it definitely is time to move on.
I hope I get out of here in May and then find someplace else to scramble my brain cells. Any suggestions are welcome, as long as they are valid ones.
So, its off to Biocultural Interactions, South American Archaeology, Modern Middle East, and last, but not least, Adva…

This is a picture from the road on the way to Hudson Meng. The smoke is from the wildfires that are currently burning in California. The sun tonight was red, before it set.
I would not hesitate to say that the past few weeks have been an awesome experience, but I know that i…

I dug on June 20 and 21. I was then blindsided by a migraine (hello icepick to the skull) and dug on June 24. The first two days I spent scraping to 80 cm below line level. I found three flakes and three bone fragments on June 20.They were at 77cm and 78 cm bll (below line level) and the other three were at 79 cm bll. When I reached the target of 80 cm bll, the day was done. Spent Tuesday in a different unit, digging under the paleosol, about five feet below the surface. The units are all 1X1, a…

Tomorrow morning I begin my days at Hudson Meng Bison Bone Bed in the Nebraska Panhandle. Research has been going on in this area since the 1970's. Alberta and Eden points found. I can't wait. I have to ask if it is ok if I blog about it before I do details, but I am thinking that the head researcher won't mind. This dig is completely volunteer. No one is getting any kind of college credit for it, or paid for it. I think that this is a good example of how archaeology can work.
If anyone wants to…

So, June 1 puts to close a torturous May. From finals to planning the annual casino night fund raiser for Mollie's school, I have no brain left at all, and am seriously wondering if I will regain it.
Last week I spent almost forty hours at DATA working on this stupid casino thing. I am just glad that Amanda showed up because otherwise it might have had a different outcome. From what I was told today, things turned out ok. Maybe even good.
I am not so patiently waiting for June 19. As soon as Mol…
