About Me:
I am commercial archaeologist/ palaeoecologist based in Bristol in the UK. I am interested in what human and faunal remains (especially mollusca) can tell us about past diets, and also in applications of palaeoecological techniques to forensic science. I'm also very curious about the social context of the work we do as archaeologists -who it's for, what ethical standards we should hold ourselves to, the biases our own experiences can create when interpreting past sites or cultures, and how we go about communicating our work to different audiences.

I am an editor of WikiArc - The Wiki Archaeological Information Resource. which always welcomes new contributors.

The results of my archaeomalacological analyses are all online in a fully searchable database here

A survey of commercial sector field archaeologists in the UK

We thought it would be interesting to find out a little bit about the people who work as field archaeologists in the commercial sector in the UK. If you work, or have worked in the last six months, as part of the fieldwork team (perhaps as an excavator, supervisor or surveyor) on commercial archaeological projects in the UK, please take the time to answer our short survey. We estimate the survey should take less than five minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous, and you may leave… Continue

Glad you got to see the sites. The presentation mode facilitates classrooom use. I finished interpreting these site and if you check back within a week or so, you will find guided audio clips narrated by me embedded in certain loci. The audio stage is new, but up and running at a few sites, including En Gev, Bethsaida, Tel Hadar, Herodium, and a few sites in Jordan.

Thanks, Matthew. I've been working on audio interprtations for Gush Halav (Gischala) and Khirbet Shema' all day for the VWP and so was delighted and encouraged to find your message after this time-consuming task. Please continue to use or refer it as you may. By the way, I'll be leaving for Bethsaida on June 14 and plan on taking my volunteers to Petra on June 30. Would this happen to square with your friend's visit? Best wishes, and thanks again for the comment!

Prof. Law, your work sounds fascinating. In what ground are these soil samples or diets studied? And, what are the dates?

I don't know if I've mentioned it before here, but I've been fascinated by the manner in which we are forced to study ancient man--if they had only left more written evidence, if you know what I mean, and, yet the study of ancient man from our perspective is forced to be unflinchingly objective, so in a sense the lack of written evidence is potentially a good thing!
