The quickest and surest way to get some specimens is to either have friends that hunt for meat or find a meat processor. Where I am from, they are not rare. The deal is you have to know what the regulations are for the remainder carcass. My friend...

why don't you apply for an MSc in Zooarchaeology at the Univ. of York? It's a 1 year program - you'd have to go there to do it - but you'd really learn a lot about faunal analysis. They have several famous zooarchaeologists there. After that, you'd be in a stronger position to apply to grad schools. btw, would you be interested in analyzing the muroidea from the assemblage I'm using in my dissertation? It's a very small sample, probably most of it is intrusive, but I don't have the time (or the patience!) at this point to try identify them to species. I've rather unceremoniously lumped them all under "rodents" in my species identification. (My diss is focused on pastoralism and herding strategies, esp for sheep and goat). Anyway, most of these specimens appear to be complete, so that might help aid identification. The site is called Sos Hoyuk. It is located in northeastern Turkey and is dated to approx 3500/3300 - 2200 cal BC. Thus, these remains will belong to species native to Eurasia. Previous faunal research has identified species such as the bi-colored white-toothed shrew, mountain mole rat, Turkish hamster, wood mouse, and the Asia Minor suslik. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to pay you, but I think this would be great research experience. You could spruce it up on your c.v. for grad school! Hopefully, you could get a conference paper or article out of the data. Plus, you'd have access to the rest of the faunal data (already analyzed), so you could put what you have in context. Anyway, this is a lot to hit you with all at once, I apologize, but if you're interested, let me know and we'll work something out. This isn't something you'd necessarily have to start right away or finish by a fixed deadline. We can work around your schedule.

Hey Jessica, you should consider applying to NYU for grad school. The zooarchaeologist in our department is Pam Crabtree (my advisor), who is really great. NYU also has amazing funding - all entering students receive a 5 year fellowship that includes tuition, $22,000 stipend (increases by $1000 every year), and health insurance. By the way, I'm originally from West Orange - my dad taught me how to drive in the MSU parking lot!

Jessica! I joined :) How are you doing? I never emailed you back on facebook, SORRY, I am terrible with keeping in touch. I remember you asked me to read and discuss somethings with you, so don't hesitate to send them over. Hope life is treating you well. Keep in touch, and I will try to do the same :)

Jessica,

Welcome to ArchaeologyNet! We're small right now, but growing, and as you can see, there is already a fascinating variety of archaeologists or students in the group. Please share your experiences and comments/issues with us as time goes on. How did you find out about us?

About Me:
I'm finishing up an undergraduate degree in Anthropology at Montclair State University. I'll be applying to graduate schools over the summer. I would like to study rodents (the family Muridae possibly?) in the archaeological record, focusing on nutritional deficiencies apparent in skeletal remains. I have excavated in Belize (Chawak But'o'ob in 2005) and in Peru (Santa Rita B in 2006). I'm also interested in print layout design as a hobby and have worked at The Montclarion, my school newspaper, since fall 2004.

should be asleep...

It's 5:26am... I'm waiting for a few pages to go through copy here at the newspaper and it's only getting more difficult to flip through textbooks while I attempt to keep myself occupied. The longer I sit here, the more I would like to avoid the production side of publication. My position depends too much on other people's punctuality. The most difficult aspect of the job is to not do everyone's work for them; graduation is within reach and the editors need to learn the intricate details within… Continue

Member #31! It's nice to get in at "ground level" sometimes. I Love the idea of an Archaeology Facebook/Myspace page! I've had problems locating archaeologists with similar interests to mine (zooarch), but archaeonet.com has the potential to be a great networking experience! Although I'm still an undergraduate I've been researching information on my possible Master's Thesis for about 6 months now. If you're interested in zooarchaeology I would love to exchange ideas with you!

I've been slowly d… Continue
