Sedgeford Historical and Archaeology Research Project

I have just spent a great week studying 'Human Remains' at the Anglo Saxon excavation site in Sedgeford, Norfolk, East Anglia. This was the thirteenth season there and the graveyard has now become the campsite and the settlement excavation has begun. The seven of us on th HR course started at 8.30 each morning working through till 5.30 with the appropriate breaks for food and drink. The tgutors were friendly and well informed transmitting to us information about the human skeleton from genuine e… Continue

Cave Art

I am going to Cresswell crags on Thursday afternoon to visit the Church Hole Cavern where Britains answer to Cave Art is situated. At first I was told it was not open to the general public as they had schools trips every day but when I said I was an archaeologist they have made a special visite for me!! I hope to take some photos and post them next week.

Singing Megaliths.

On Wednesday I returned to Avebury to take more photos and see what had happened since the big excavation at Silbury Hill. Photos will be posted soon. Silsbury is all tidied up for the next generation. However, while walking round the stones I came across a a small crowd round a stone listening to a man talking about the singing which I did hear. Apparently the sheep listen to it too. The man Tareth has been researching this for some time and claims this common to a lot of magaliths ( but he has… Continue

I have been back just over a week now but I am still having difficulty sorting my photos of which there are nearly 1000. The work was very interesting as the cultural is very different to that of an Englishman brought up in a non c… Continue

Holiday in Jersey, Channel Islands, UK

Eileen and I have just returned from a short holiday on the beautiful island of Jersey (British but close to France). I shall send details to anyone who wants more details. To keep busy apart from reading Renfrew and Bahn on subsistence, I visited 2 of the twelve megalith sites and a medieval Fishermans Chapel for the frescoes. With the next few days I shall be bringing you my photos.

Guten Tag Gerald! I will be working in the Magdeburg Dom with three German archaeologists on a trench they made earlier. The plans are a bit chaotic, but I am sure we'll be able to meet and/or work together, although it sounds like I will be an intern separate from the UK intake. Then again, my German is not THAT good, so we'll see!

Hello Gerald, it appears I will be working with you for awhile on the Magdeburg excavations; I look forward to the experience!

Hello Gerald, I am in Magdeburg at the moment and was wondering which/where the Medieval Defence System is you would be working on or who is running the project. I could easily translate some literature on the site when I know which one it is, otherwise I'll just try and see what info I can find for you while I'm out here.

Deutsch-englisches Worterbuch fur Kunstgeschichte und Archaologie. I found this book to be useful for work. Unfortunately it is a one way translation book from German to English, but once you have a general grasp of certain names (Mauer= wall) you can find everything easily in this book.

Hi Gerald, I have borrowed some books from Humboldt University in the past and I believe they had a rather good German->English Dictionary for Art History/Archaeology that was useful. I am regularly in Magdeburg and visit the archaeological sites every time, so I will keep in touch and let you know some book titles soon!

Enjoy your trip, Gerald! I enjoy medieval iconography, with all of its heavy blacks and reds...I await your photos and stories. Just remember to cross yourself from right to left when you enter the monasteries!

Explainations are up! They are mainly Geology Club outings all within the Mojave Desert and Owen's Valley in Cailfornia... Thanks for the inquiry!

Very interesting photos. What is the dating on the graves? Regarding the unusual foot-shaped markings, perhaps a chemical analysis of them would shed some light on what they are?
