Hi there...I'm delighted to find this site. Very interested in Greco-Roman history and archaeology, too old to become a "professional" but definitely want to be involved in more digs as a volunteer. (I've worked on digs in Italy and Mallorca.)
I'm retired, but still actively "working" as a fine art photographer (i.e. gallery exhibits). I always wanted to be an archaeologist--since grade school!--but it never worked out. Fascinated by Greco-Roman history, and have spent much time in Italy, less in Greece. Volunteered on two digs: one to Cumae, near Naples, and one to Mallorca. With luck, I'll have many more opportunities.

The urban areas of Macedonia such as Skopje are mostly developed as any East European city. The rural areas and towns are still rural. They may or may not have modern conveniences "that work". I was in Stobi about five years ago and it is a well developed tourist stop now. Baths, living quarters, amplitheater and other structures. The excavations were continuing I believe last time I past it in June, 09 on my way to Greece. I have never worked with Balkan Heritage but they seem to have a lot going on. David Hodo
Well, it is possible to work as a volunteer. We are digging in Dobrudja, Romania, at Halmyris (modern Murighiol, Tulcea county). If you want to participate at the archaeological excavations there, please contact dr. Mihail Zahariade (zahariade@yahoo.com) . I do not know whether is not too late for this year (the research is already in progress and it will last till the end of August), but for the next year it will be possible for sure. Also, you should search for Myrna Phelps (I think she is working with the Earthwatch organization) for opportunities for digging. Or, if you want to participate next year to some other archaeological excavations in Dobrudja (I.E. Tropaeum Traiani - Adamclisi, Constanta county), you should contact dr. Linda Ellis from the USSF, or. Alexandru Barnea, the scientific coordinator at Tropaeum Traiani. If you are interested, we'll keep in touch. Not to forget, you can also practice photography - the landscape is fantastic in the Danube Delta.
