The entirety of science is conflicting with society more and more. We value the past less and less as technology changes, and what we need to realize is that you have to know the past to be able to understand what is happening in the present and what could happen in the future. Studying the past makes it more possible for everyone to understand others even without knowing how to talk to them. If you understand the culture of the past, the present can be less of a mystery.

If we didn't occasionally formulate and use some theory then we'd have no framework to make sense of the stuff we recover from the field. Always enjoy hearing what my colleagues think about how we organize and present our interpretations.
