ArchaeologyNet

A business network for archaeologists

Since there are only a handful of members so far, I thought it may be interesting (or perhaps it's just curiousity on my part) to learn which CRM companies everyone has worked with. I've worked with HRA Gray & Pape (Houston and Richmond offices), Skelly & Loy, Environment & Archaeology, and RK&K Engineers (Baltimore).

As archaeology is an avocation for me and not a profession, I must admit that I have never worked for a CRM company, unless of course you define the Mount Vernon Ladies Association as a CRM company, for which I have worked as a volunteer.

I'm strictly an academic so I had to Google the term before I could answer!

I have worked for the University of Maine in Farmington and a bit for Gilespie and Sons. It was fun, but I don't think it was for me, but I would not have done anything different if given the choice, I think I learned more in 6 months doing CRM than I did in all 3 of my field schools. I may go back and do it again this coming summer, but who knows where grad school will take me.

I spent about a year working for the National Park Service (South East Archeological Center) doing compliance work before moving onto the United States Forest Service, its not a private company, but we focus mainly on CRM work.

I started out working for the State of Alabama's Office of Archaeological Research in the mid-80s while still an undergraduate. Moving out west for a while, I worked with Mariah Associates(now a part of TRC), Larsen-Tibesar & Assoc., and Native Cultural Services. After another stint of graduate school and teaching at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I went out with EPG, Inc., WCRM, SWCA, EcoSystems Mgmt., and the contract arm of the Museum of New Mexico. Gallivanting over to the Midwest I did Indiana DOT Phase Is with CCRG, and followed that with some pipeline work with the same company. Returning to the southeast, I have worked with ACC, R.S. Webb & Assoc., New South Assoc., and currently with TRC-Environmental's Nashville office. This doesn't count the field work with the Dept. of the Interior, Park Service, Forest Service, BLM, which is all Federal albeit still CRM. There's other stuff, but it is not with CRM companies in the United States.

This is my first time out. I'm currently employed by the U. of Iowa, Office of the State Archaeologist. We're completing phase ll pipeline work in NE Missouri.

I worked for ACC (Archaeological Consultants of the Carolinas) for 2 years, first as a lab technician then as assistant lab director and archaeologist. I haven't worked for other companies, so can't compare, but I really enjoyed the team there.

I like the crew over at ACC a great deal as well. They are a real pleasure to work with, and do very good work.

I've just graduated with my BA, so I haven't had the opportunity to work with any yet. I just wanted to say though that this topic really helped me find a bunch of companies I hadn't looked into yet, thanks!
